Benjamin Britten 's 1946 two-act opera marked the inception of the English Opera Group, which in turn gave rise to the Aldeburgh music festival in 1947. This production - conducted by Paul Daniel and directed for the stage by David McVicar - opened the 54th festival earlier this month. The plot concerns the tragic results of a bet made between three Roman officers. Presented by Stephanie Hughes.
