Choice: Music: Tavener: 5.00pm BBC2
A new work for the millennium from one of Britain's pre-eminent composers receives its world premiere in St Paul's Cathedral in the presence of the Prince of Wales. Performed by the City of London Sinfonia, St Paul's Cathedral Choir, the BBC Singers and soloists, it is described as "a semi-dramatised religious ceremony" by John Tavener. He joined the Greek Orthodox Church over 20 years ago and this composition draws on many religious traditions and cultures. Based on a Byzantine chant, it calls on unconventional, sacred instruments including a trumpet made out of a ram's horn and Tibetan temple bells. These are played in different positions in the cathedral to exploit the building's echo. (GE)
