The comings and goings of its various tenants - including an communist activist, a champion racing driver and two Irish musicians - are related by Betty Keith , a redoubtable octogenarian nicknamed "the stairguardian" by fellow residents, who has lived in the flat at the bottom of the staircase for 45 years. Concluding the series that examines the role of various thinkers who pioneered the modern understanding of philosophical freedom. The Road to Freedom. A biographical study of French philosopher, playwright and novelist Jean-Paul Sartre , exploring the aetiology of his thought and how his popularisation of existentialism radically changed the way we see ourselves.
The documentary examines the effect on Sartre at living through the German occupation of Paris and the part played in his life and thought by Simone de Beauvoir and the many love affairs that he justified with the idea of "contingent love". The programme also features accounts from his friends and archive interviews.
