It is now accepted that folic acid, a form of vitamin B, greatly reduces a pregnant woman's chances of having a baby with spina bifida. There is also evidence that folic acid may help to fight heart disease and strokes. The US government has decided to fortify flour with it from January 1998. Four young RAF cooks learn the tricks of the trade from Gary Rhodes, who arrives at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the "flying car" from the 1968 film. Recipes include roast lamb with lemon and mint, plus mushroom tart followed by caramel creams with walnut and maple syrup biscuits.
