Aliens Go Home
California has always been a magnet for immigrants. The pioneer settlers headed west, and in the 1840s came the gold rush. In this century the film industry has attracted the rich and the fruit farms the poor. As a result, this single American state has become one of the world's biggest economies.
But is the bubble about to burst? A catalogue of natural disasters - fire, flood and earthquake - violence on the streets and deep recession have combined with unease about the changing character of California's communities to produce a backlash against immigrants both legal and illegal. Emily Buchanan reports on the growing clamour to close the door to the Golden State.
