The last of five programmes on the history of mass education in England and Wales.
Industry
England's early industrial supremacy owed little to education. As foreign competition loomed, schools in Victorian Birmingham began to link their timetable to the needs of local manufacturers. Yet 100 years later, vocational education is still a new and controversial issue.

Beverley, North Humberside 'From the train it looks as if the railway is going to run straight through the transept, but at the last moment it swerves to the right, and, thank goodness, the second finest non-cathedral church in England remains intact.
Alec Clifton-Taylor visits this little-known town just north of the Humber, 'in what I still continue to call the East
Riding of Yorkshire.' Its prize possession is the wonderful medieval Minster church built of Tadcaster limestone, but there are also some fine Georgian brick houses with elegant staircases and cornices and some excellent stucco.
