(1900-1985)
Introduced by Eric Robson Last month Basil Bunting died aged 85. Now acknowledged as a major literary figure, Bunting spent the first 60 years of his life in relative obscurity. He worked in a variety of occupations, including as intelligence officer in Persia and foreign correspondent for The Times. In the First World War he was a conscientious objector, and later a close friend of W.B. Yeats and Ezra Pound. Bunting always refused to discuss these events, but in this unique film (made in 1983 and originally entitled S3 Answers ...and Some
Questions) he spoke for the first time about himself and his life to the American critic Jonathan Williams.

Moon Rills
The moon is a world of mountains, craters, valleys, peaks and huge waterless seas. Of special interest are the cracklike features known as rills, which are unlike anything we find on earth. Patrick Moore talks about them to Dr Lionel Wilson of the University of Lancaster, who has been making a careful study of these remarkable lunar features. Producer pieter MORPURGO

The first act of The Valkyrie is set in Hunding's dwelling-place in a forest. After the power struggle of The
Rhinegold, the action has moved on a generation and shifted from Valhalla into the human world. This act contains some of Wagner's most vivid and passionate music, depicting the star-crossed love of the lonely outcast Siegmund for Sieglinde, the oppressed and emotion-starved wife of Hunding.

Wagner and his Singers
The Ring demands a special breed of singers. How did
Wagner find and train them for the first production?
Gwyneth Jones and Donald McIntyre , two stars from this production, explain how the tradition continues.
