The Rhine Gold forms the vast prologue to The Ring of the Nibelung by Richard Wagner. It sets the scene for the human drama to follow.
The Nibelung dwarf Alberich steals the precious Rhine gold from the Rhinemaidens, and by renouncing love, fashions from it a magic ring.
Wotan, the ruler of the gods, covets the ring for the power it represents, but is forced in turn to yield it to the giants, and the violent struggle for world domination depicted in The Ring is under way.
Patrice Chereau 's challenging Bayreuth production provides a striking new interpretation of a century-old masterpiece.
