The Rhine Gold forms the vast prologue to The Ring of the Nibelung by Richard Wagner. It sets the scene for the human drama to follow.
The Nibelung dwarf Alberich steals the precious Rhine gold from the Rhinemaidens, and by renouncing love, fashions from it a magic ring.
Wotan, the ruler of the gods, covets the ring for the power it represents, but is forced in turn to yield it to the giants, and the violent struggle for world domination depicted in The Ring is under way.
Patrice Chereau 's challenging Bayreuth production provides a striking new interpretation of a century-old masterpiece.

The centenary production of The Ring was recorded in Wagner's own theatre under the personal artistic supervision of the composer's grandson, WOLFGANG WAGNER. BAYREUTH FESTIVAL CHORUS

In his desperate attempt to escape Civil War recruitment young Drew Dixon decides to head West - hoping to find fame and fortune.
Unfortunately, Drew's first encounter is with Jake Rumsey and his gang of juvenile outlaws. Together they begin the journey from Ohio and their descent into lawlessness. Robert Benton , director of Kramer vs Kramer and, more recently, Places in the Heart, creates a Western odyssey that is intermittently elegiac, savage and resonant with myth. It is one of the most haunting movies of the past decade.
