Going Local in America
There are 900 local TV stations in the USA, which provide entertainment as well as a wealth of news, and investigations which cover topics as varied as 'what goes into a hamburger' to ' the despair of living in city slums'. They offer advice too. In Chicago when there were 10,000 cases of rape last year a local station took up the story of 25-year-old Paulette who was raped by four men, to illustrate what should be done by public authorities and by women themselves to prevent the crime which is terrorising the city.
The award-winning film is one of the reports from American local TV which Frank Gillard presents tonight.
