On 6 March 1942 a secret radio operator working for the Dutch Resistance was captured by Major Herman Giskes of German Military Intelligence in Holland. This gave the Germans an unparalleled chance to smash the Dutch underground movement - and even, perhaps, discover the date set for the Allied invasion of Europe.
The resulting duel of wits between Giskes and his Dutch captive, Hubertus Lauwers, led to one of the most brilliant and desperate warnings in the history of secret messages.
