The cities of Britain are all in the throes of massive reconstruction. In all of them - Birmingham, Manchester, Sheffield, Hull, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool - demolition gangs are laying acres of once familiar streets to waste. Ahead of them they create twilight zones inhabited by twilight people. There are the old, clinging bewildered to their homes and their memories. And there is an unhappy breed of people shifting from house to house always just in front of the bulldozers' battle-line, who live in condemned buildings either because it suits their way or life or because they have nowhere else to go - people who are raising children to whom the broken brick is not only a weapon but a way of life.

As the old, densely populated inner areas of our cities are wiped out by the planners and their demolition men, the people are being moved, thousands-at a time, to the new semi-rural estates on the edge of town.
The new homes have picture windows, central heating, constant hot water, and inside lavatories. But the newcomers soon learn that it takes more than these creature comforts to make a working man's paradise. The new estates make demands. Paradise must be paid for. And if the people have not the resources, human and financial, to pay the bill, it can become a nightmare even while it is still being built.
