40,000 American servicemen dead - fighting in Vietnam: fighting in a war that has become America's least popular cause. Three-and-a-half million young Americans in uniform - most of them conscripts: conscripted whether they like it or not. In the middle of it all, in Honolulu, 30 young servicemen sought sanctuary in a church, took off their uniforms, and declared that - whatever the consequences - they could no longer fight. The military surrounded the church with intelligence agents. The Pentagon pondered the problem; already deeply concerned at the spread of dissent among servicemen. Yet still resistance to the Vietnam war within the services is growing.
Desmond Wilcox, with cameraman Phil Meheux, flew to Honolulu, for the start of a two-part enquiry: looking first at the men in sanctuary; the servicemen that some Americans call 'men of conscience,' and others call cowards. Next week's programme discovers just how powerful the resistance in the ranks now is.
