Two months after the war in Europe ended Bruce Woodcock became Heavyweight Champion of Great Britain and the British Empire. Many people thought that title could be converted to World champion. In order to go that far Woodcock had to meet the Americans, and one of the toughest was Joe Baksi.

Freddie Mills was the current Light-heavyweight Champion of the World. He had met Bruce Woodcock before in 1946 and lost in 12 rounds. Now they were matched again and Mills had not lost a fight for two years.
