On his way to the top. Jimmy McLarnin started as a flyweight. During this stage of his career he met and defeated Pancho Villa. By 1933 he was welterweight champion of the world, then he lost to Barney Ross in May 1934. This is the return match for the title.
New York City: September 17, 1934 Barney Ross v. Jimmy McLarnin
The second meeting - The welterweight championship of the world

Ross won the first, McLarnin regained his title four months later. Both contestants had gone the distance. After thirty rounds of boxing neither could say he was the better. The decider was set exactly one year after the first meeting and both men fully intended to win.
