Rodelinda, Queen of the Lombards, is held captive by Grimoaldo. Believing her husband Bertarido to be dead, she spurns the advances of her captor. Bertarido and Grimoaldo's jilted lover, Eduige, plot to resolve the situation.

6.35 Interval: Celebrity, Scandal and Opera Genius - Handel's Rodelinda and the Royal Academy The premiere, in London, of Handel's Rodelinda in 1725 brought together two of the age's most celebrated divas - the castrato Senesio and the soprano Cuzzoni - and egos, salaries and scandal created as much interest as the opera. Derek Alsop investigates this lucrative and competitive world and discovers the musical reasons for Rodelinda becoming such an instant and continuing favourite.
