Donald Macleod. Like many other artists, the events of the October Revolution led to Prokofiev's departure from the Soviet Union. Having gained official permission to leave his homeland, he boarded the Trans-Siberian Railway in 1918, eventually making his way to America. Once there he set about establishing himself as a virtuoso pianist and composer.
