The Berlin Conference, 1884, was the meeting when the European colonial powers, with Russia and America, formalised the so-called Scramble for Africa and divided the continent's interior among themselves. Needless to say, not a single African was among the delegates.
Frances Stonor Saunders examines the consequences of this meeting and explores the nature of discussions that are dictated by diplomacy.
Verity Sharp with music by improviser and composer Django Bates, an excerpt from Geoff Smith's soundtrack for The Cabinet of Dr Caligari performed on microtonal hammered dulcimers, and an 18th-century French harpsichord piece by Bodin de Boismortier.
