Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London.
Simon Rattle conducts the first performance in modern times of a Wagner opera played on instruments of the period in which it was composed. Das Rheingold is the first of the four-part Ring cycle (the other parts are planned for the next three seasons of Proms). Alberich the Nibelung steals the Rhinegold from the Rhinemaidens and forges it into a ring. This in turn is stolen by Wotan, setting in motion a cycle of exploitation and murder, under the corrupting influence of the ring, that leads to the eventual downfall of the gods. Presented by Andrew McGregor.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Jean-Jacques Rousseau sought refuge in England, aided by Scottish philosopher David Hume. His books, which were considered highly subversive, had been burnt in France and Switzerland. But, as Jonathan Ree discovers, Rousseau's time in Britain was far from happy. Producer David Edmonds
