Eugene Onegin
At 26, Russian conductor Tugan Sokhiev is the Welsh National Opera's youngest ever music director, and Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin is his first new production with the company. In the opera, which is based on a verse-novel by Pushkin, the introverted young Tatyana declares her love for the sophisticated Onegin and is rejected. Years later, when he finally returns her feelings, she refuses him. Amid an international cast, British soprano Amanda Roocroft takes on the role of Tatyana for the first time. The performance, which is sung in Russian, was recorded at Cardiff's New Theatre and is introduced by Stephanie Hughes.
