4/5. Symphony No 40 in G minor, K550
Donald Macleod relates how, around 1786, Mozart's popularity with the Viennese public had begun to wane. By June 1788 he was in serious financial trouble. This was partially caused by his own mismanagement of his financial affairs, but also because the war between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Turks had a huge impact on sponsorship of the arts. Mozart's health was beginning to fail and his six-month-old daughter died. No wonder, then. that the Symphony in G minor reflects tragic restlessness.
