4: Escaping Vienna: Webern.
Donald Macleod looks at Webem's life and work from the end of the composer's studies with Schoenberg in 1906 to his death in mysterious circumstances outside Vienna after the end of the war in 1945. Though Webern was initially held back by an obsessive devotion to Schoenberg, he eventually became one of the most influential composers of his generation. A concert given earlier this month at the Barbican concert hall, in which the cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Kathryn Stott appeared togetherforthe second time as part of the Barbican's Great Performers season.
