Donald Macleod looks at the early life and music of Russian composer
Sergei Prokofiev. He spent his childhood on an estate on the Ukrainian Steppe but his prodigious talent meant that at only 13 years of age, he entered the St
Petersburg Conservatoire. There, his extreme youth, outspoken temperament and outstanding ability both as a pianist and a composer did not make relations with his fellow students easy, and his radical musical ideas soon upset his reactionary professors, including Alexander Glazunov.
