4: Savoy Theatre. Backstage at the Savoy, Donald Macleod squeezes down the same stairs that Sullivan trod in the theatre that was built to stage his greatest triumphs. Today's programme features excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience, lolanthe, Princess Ida, Ruddigore, The Yeomen of the Guard and The Mikado-their single greatest hit. Plus excerpts from Sullivan's incidental music for The Merry Wives of Windsor and an unusual collaboration with Gilbert: the sacred musical drama The Martyr of Antioch.

Edward Seckerson introduces two Rodgers and Hart musicals, recorded in concert earlier this year at the Brighton Dome.
Julia McKenzie tells the stories, with new concert narrations by David Benedict.

"Pal Joey"
A caddish anti-hero juggles the affections of naive chorus girl and wealthy society dame. Show stoppers include "I Could Write a Book" and "Bewitched".

"On Your Toes"
Gangsters, vaudeville and the Russian Ballet come together in this riotous, romantic romp, which culminates in the orchestral tour de force "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue".

Maida Vale Singers, BBC Concert Orchestra, conductor Robert Ziegler

Performance on 3
7.30pm R3
A double treat for Rodgers and Hart fans, in a performance of both "Pal Joey" and "On Your Toes". In star-studded cast, Tim Flavin is worth listening out for: playing the thoroughly rotten cad Joey Evans, he's following in the footsteps of both Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. But his performance in the role was hot enough to win him an Olivier award. (Jane Anderson)
