Lionel Hampton. Julian Joseph introduces recordings of the American vibes player and bandleader Lionel Hampton , who first came to prominence in the thirties with the Benny Goodman Quartet. Hampton left
Goodman in 1940 to set up a big band that was to become one of the most successful and enduring outfits of its kind, featuring the likes of Illinois Jacquet, Dexter Gordon , Clark Terry and Dinah Washington. Music includes highlights from a concert given by the Lionel Hampton Orchestra at the Lewisham Jazz Festival in 1989.
