(1841-94). This week Donald Macleod looks at the I ife and work of the French composer Emmanuel Chabrier , who spent most of his adult life as a civil servant at the Ministry of the Interior. Chabrierwas a spectacular pianist, prone to assaulting the instrument (which often came off worst), and a friend and confidant of Parisian artists. He was at his best in music which celebrates life and its absurdities and he was loved and admired by many of his contemporaries.

BBC Symphony Orchestra
A concert given last month in Italy at the Auditoria della Fierra as part of the Rimini Festival. The theme of the festival was ballet music and offered a rare opportunity to hear Prokofiev's second ballet The Tale of the Buffoon, or Chout. This work opened in Paris in May 1921 in a lavish production and was the novelty of the season, though London critics were shocked.
