This month sees the 400th anniversary of Jacopo Peri 's Fur/d/ce, the earnest opera to survive comptete. which was first performed on 6 October 1600. Lucie
Skeaping considers some of the events that brought this new musical genre into being. The programme includes music by Jacopo Peri , Vincenzo Galilei, Giulio
Caccini as well as extracts from Giovanni de Bardi's great Intermedio of 1589. Producer Chris Wines.

There is a tendency to think of the Nordic states as being culturally unified, but in this talk the Finnish writer Oili Kivinen shows how differences of history and geography have produced real cultural diversity: from Finland, with its proximity to the Russian world and imagination, to Denmark, the 'bad Nordic', which looks to the south.
