In tonight's programme in the series on the singers of Beirut, Aref Hijjawi presents a portrait of the Arab world's greatest singing star - Fairuz. She was trained in the traditions of Arab classical singing and married a composer whose songs brought her to international fame in the 1950s. Her decision to remain in Beirut during the years of civil war made her a national heroine.
