Gigantic and dramatic, tragic and patriotic, Prokofiev's flamboyant cantata challenged the Soviet censors in 1937 and waited decades for a first complete performance. The work is complemented at the Royal Albert Hall by Britten's wartime elegy and music by two revolutionary 19th-century composers.
