Trade: the History of the Atlantic Slave Trade 1440-1870 by Hugh Thomas. The Atlantic slave trade was one of the most elaborate and inhumane commercial ventures ever.
Between 1492 and 1870, around ten million black slaves were transported from Africa. In his wide-ranging survey, the acclaimed historian Hugh Thomas attempts a comprehensive account of the trade and its motivation.
