Walter Legge was one of the last great impresarios, a visionary whose formidable authority helped shape the postwar music scene. For the recording studio, he assembled a galaxy of major artists to make recordings of the core repertoire which are still benchmark performances. He founded his own orchestra - the Philharmonia - and knew everything about any artist of quality.
