Walter Legge was one of the last great impresarios, a visionary whose formidable authority helped shape the postwar music scene. For the recording studio, he assembled a galaxy of major artists to make recordings of the core repertoire which are still benchmark performances. He founded his own orchestra - the Philharmonia - and knew everything about any artist of quality. The season of music for the Mass continues with a performance from the Chapel Royal in the Palace of Versailles, presented by Jeremy Summerly. Couperin's sumptuous mass setting, designed for use on feast days, was written for the church of St Gervais in Paris, where he was organist before his appointment to the Chapel Royal.
