4: Jumping Bean. Hawkins's need for acceptance and applause, together with his passion for life, prohibited a purely contemplative attitude to his own musical progress. After over-zealous demonstrations of hot stomping in the early years, his energy by 1960 was greatly diminished and he tended to fall dangerously behind the beat.
