Ronald Atkins presents the first of five programmes on this American keyboard player and composer.
Hancock first made an impact when, at the age of 11, he played a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony
Orchestra. But his real love was jazz, and when the trumpeter Donald Byrd invited him to New York in 1961, he went immediately. Before long, he had recorded his first album, from which Watermelon Man became a hit single.
