SUISSE ROMANDE ORCHESTRA conducted by richard ARMSTRONG Acts 1 and 2 0 HEAR THIS! page 16
Verdi based Don Carlos on Schiller's play, written 80 years earlier. The many political intricacies of the Spanish Court were simplified for the opera libretto. So too were the characters - the Marquis of Posa. liberal friend of Carlos, is more complete and complex in the play than in the opera. Nicholas Hytner , who successfully produced Schiller's drama at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre last year, talks to Rodney Milnes about the themes of the play. Producer JOHN BOUNDY
