The controversial title Jesus's Marriage assured a stormy reception for this new opera at the 1980 Vienna Festival.
In the opera a symbolic marriage is contracted between Jesus and Death, the latter personified as a woman who doubles as Judas Iscariot. Death swears vengeance on Jesus for stealing Lazarus from her. and in a mock trial with the Apostles as jury and herself as judge, sentences him to die on the cross.
