Jacques Offenbach - (1819-80)
' I shall die Offenbach once said, 'with a tune at the end of my pen ': a prophecy which was fulfilled when the composer died on 5 October 1880 with his magnum opus. The Tales of Hoffmann, uncompleted. Nevertheless, with about 100 stage works to his name, as well as a surprising quantity of other music, Offenbach can hardly be said to have left posterity short of material.
This week's programmes unearth some lesser-known ' feuillets ' from the master's pen, without neglecting old favourites. Ba-ta-clan: Finale

Second of four programmes
The novelist Anthony Burgess was the 1980 T.S. Eliot Memorial Lecturer at the University of Kent. In four lectures recorded at Canterbury earlier this year, he explored the two arts in rivalry and in collaboration.
'Let us be careful when we condemn literary work that seems obscure... it may well be that the author of that work is a musician and cannot write any other way.'
