Rameau's 'pastorale héroїque ', Zais, is being broadcast on Radio 3 this evening, and another of his dramatic works in the same genre, Nais, is being performed in London's Old Vic theatre at the end of the month. Arthur Hutchings discusses this peculiarly French entertainment and draws attention to Rameau's importance as an orchestrator.
