or, Death Abdicates
(Der Kaiser von Atlantis) A legend in four scenes by PETER KIEN , sung in the English translation by AARON KRAMER
Music by Viktor Ullmann The Emperor of Atlantis was written for performance in Thereslenstadt, the concentration camp in northern Czechoslovakia, and completed there in 1944. The opera was rehearsed but its performance was prohibited, possibly because of its anti-Hitler, anti-war subject, and both Ullmann and Kien perished in Auschwitz. The manuscript eventually came into the hands of Kerry Woodward who edited it and conducted the world premiere in Amsterdam in 1975. with the voices of BRIAN SANDERS and EDWARD KELSEY LONDON SINFONIETTA conducted by KERRY WOODWARD
