I don't get ideas just sitting around waiting for them. They come from somewhere and I get them teaching.'
At 32 Hindemith added teaching to his enormous range of musical activities (he expected his students to share his working knowledge of every orchestral instrument). These words reflect his strongly practical view of composition - a view which stemmed from his belief in being able to write for any occasion or group of performers.
