Sir Arthur Evans's fame as an archaeologist rests largely on his spectacular discoveries at Knossos. Twenty years before this, however, he had witnessed the first stir-rings of Slav rebellion in south-east Europe against the rule of Ottoman Turkey. Professor John Wilkes considers Sir Arthur Evans 's achievements as an archaeologist and political correspondent in the Balkans a century ago.
