Unusually for a 20th century composer, Barber (b 1910) has always given high prominence to lyricism in his music. Many of his early compositions are unashamedly romantic, but even in his later works - less diatonic and more angular in style - Barber's gift for melody is still strongly in evidence. He has also shown an exceptionally sensitive response to words, as can be heard this week in some of his major vocal works.
