First of two programmes based on the love letters which a young Chinese woman, Kwei-li, daughter of a Viceroy, wrote to her husband about 100 years ago. Compiled and presented by George W. Scott, from two books by Elizabeth Cooper
with Carole Boyd as Kwei-li

'He is here, your son! I put out my hand and touch him, and the breath of the wind through the pine trees brings the music of the gods to me. He is big and strong and beautiful. They tell me he will grow to be a valiant man.'
'My son is dead. I have held him all the night close to my heart and it does not give him warmth. They have taken him from me and told me he has gone to the gods. There are no gods. I am alone.'

The Story of a Courtship
Written and compiled by Jeanne and Norman MacKenzie

'No, dear, I do not even look at your photograph. It is too hideous for anything. Do be done in a grey suit by Elliott and Fry and let me have your head only - it is the head only that I am marrying.'

with Anna Massey as Beatrice Potter and Clive Swift as Sidney Webb
Narrator John Rowe

One of the most powerful influences in British political life at the turn of the century was the crusading Socialist partnership of Beatrice and Sidney Webb. The comic and moving story of how they met, what they thought of one another and why eventually they married is documented in The Letters of Sidney and Beatrice Webb, edited by Norman MacKenzie, to be published shortly by Cambridge University Press. The programme is based on this previously unpublished correspondence.

Fiftv years ago this year, the pianist Vladimir Horowitz made his American dibut. In recognition of the anniversary, he agreed last February to play a concerto in public, something he had not undertaken for many years. The work he chose was Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No 3 in D minor, Op 30, which he performed with the NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA conducted by EUGENE ORMANBY.
Tonight, there is a chance to hear the live recording made of the occasion: records
