When China's Columbus Discovered the West
When the Portuguese first landed in East Africa in 1498, the locals were not surprised to see pale faces. They had seen
'people the colour of the day' before: the crews of Chinese naval expeditions, who had charted the Indian Ocean and many of its bordering countries long before the Europeans.
The Chinese navy of the 15th century was vast, sophisticated and peaceable. Its chief admiral, Zheng He, was a eunuch in the Emperor's court. Today he is a Chinese national hero, but the West, familiar with the achievements of Vasco da Gama and the conquistadores, has never heard of him.
