'As a child I was compelled to the violin. My mother taught me to read music when I was about five. I knew nothing about music except what I could make on the violin. It's not the orthodox way to begin a musical career and I've since had to fill in a great many gaps, but it was nonetheless the way that most nearly corresponded to what I felt. The violin was principally a necessity for self-expression.' This evening Yehudi Menuhin gave a concert in the Royal Albert Hall to mark the 50th anniversary of his London debut.
With the aid of the BBC Sound Archives and recordings of his own. Robin Daniels recaptures some of the highlights of many conversations he's had with the world-famous violinist during the preparation of a book to mark this anniversary. Producer JOHN KNIGHT
