E. M. Forster was born 100 years ago today. From 1924. when Forster's best-known novel A Passage to India appeared. until his death in 1970. he wrote no major
work of fiction. Yet his reputation as novelist,
= polemicist and critic seemed to grow over the years. Only recently has his importance and influence been questioned.
Paul Vauchan for Kaleidoscopc talks about E. M. Forster with his biographer P. N. Forbank ,
and Lord Annan. Stephen Spender.

Many customs associated with the New Year are an entertaining excuse for a good time. In South Wales they still carry a decorated horse's skull around the farms. houses and taverns of some villages, competing in verse with the inhabitants in order to gain entry for revelry.
Tonight. Wynford Vaughan-Thomas. Ray Handy Carys Pugh. Ar Leg and Harrl Webb use a similar excuse, with stories, poetry. and songs to open up one of Glamorgan's taverns.
