Edgar Lightcap, whose money was made in the manufacture of armaments, lives as a tax exile in the Seychelles with his mistress, Pamela. A fierce quarrel with his father ten years before has made him determined never to return to the family home in England. But Christmas is coming; and the arrival of younger members of the family soon disturbs the peace of Edgar's self-imposed, sun-lit, exile.
