Just before Mrs Patrick Campbell died in France on the eve of the Second World War she wrote to Bernard Shaw: ' What will happen to the old letters. I wonder? I've stuffed them all into an old battered hatbox and I hide them under the bed at night.*
This play is based on the exchange of those letters that passed between two theatrical comets from 1809-1939.

Michael Holroyd has been collecting material for his authorised biography of Bernard Shaw for over three years, and has just edited a symposium on 'The Genius of Shaw'.
Michael Billington visited Michael Holroyd in his London study and there, surrounded by shelves and filing cabinets full of Shaviana, they discussed the character of Shaw and the art of biography.
