On 3 June this year an oil well being drilled in the Gulf of Mexico blew out. Since then, despite attempts to stem the flow, over 100 million gallons of crude oil have been released into the waters of the Gulf. Already the pollution has washed up on the Texas coastline, 500 miles to the north of the oil well, and threatens to endanger the extensive shrimp breeding grounds in the Bay of Campeche. Anthony Smith has just returned from the scene of desolation and reports on the effects of the world's largest oil spill. Producer

In the second programme of the series Hugo Young asks: Is the Jury Ever Wrong?

Research recently published from Birmingham University suggests the answer is 'yes, frequently', but many lawyers are reluctant to admit that the question should ever be asked.

Lord Hailsham of St Marylebone, Mr Justice Ackner, Chief Constable John Alderson, Peter Taylor, QC, and Michael Hill, QC, among others, discuss the implications of the research and its results.

A chronicle of colonial life in Africa compiled from the memories of the men and women who worked there.
1: White Man's Burden - White Man's Grave
' They would set up a Union Jack in their camp and rather tend to impress the natives with what wonderful things the British were doing for them.'
' I had a district of about 6,000 square miles, and it was a great life.'
' I remember we had to take almost everything with us, clothing, food. almost all the furniture.' ' We were brought up to wear the helmet until
3.0 and then a homburg hat until sunset.'
The history of British rule in Africa is a short one; it began and ended almost within the span of a man's lifetime. In the first of five programmes. Charles Allen introduces the memories of those who ruled Africa at the time when ' the British Empire was the cock of the world'.
