'As a child I was compelled to the violin. My mother taught me to read music when I was about five. I knew nothing about music except what I could make on the violin. It's not the orthodox way to begin a musical career and I've since had to fill in a great many gaps, but it was nonetheless the way that most nearly corresponded to what I felt. The violin was principally a necessity for self-expression.' This evening Yehudi Menuhin gave a concert in the Royal Albert Hall to mark the 50th anniversary of his London debut.
