Four classic cases of Court Martial
2: The Loss of the Birkenhead by JOHN PREBBLE
On 26 February 1852 Her Majesty's Steam Ship Birkenhead was lost off the southern coast of Africa. A court martial was, of course, held to try to establish the cause, and this programme recreates that court martial and what happened on the strip at the time of its loss.
Narrated by Nigel Graham with NICOLETTE MCKENZIE , TERRI LANG VALERIE MURRAY , ANNE ROSENFELD Produced and directed by CHRISTOPHER VENNING
The series devised and edited by DONALD THOMAS
2: Tom's
Story Tom Hart began social work with children by accident and today he is Superintendent of Cumberlow Lodge Reassessment Centre.
He was found the thousands of children in his care mostly unloved, sometimes unlovely, often touching and funny but always, he says, suffering from
' a sickness of the soul ' caused by the denial of their right to live in a loving home.
He talks about his efforts to provide one, to keep free of the straitjacket of red tape that might prevent him and to preserve his own equilibrium in a community which, he says, will tear its hair over a stray cat up a tree but avert its gaze from an unwanted child. Coming Up for Air by GEORGE ORWELL abridged in 17 parts by MONICA GREY
A fat, disillusioned insurance salesman, tired of life, with a nagging wife and unlovely children, remembers with a sudden longing the peace of his childhood in a country town, but a sentimental journey back cannot cure his unease. The novel, written just before the Second World War, is full of Orwell's own prophetic fears for the future. Read by David Ryall (1) Producer MARGARET ETALL
