2: Cyril Fletcher reads from WILLIAM SANSOM 'S story Old Man Alone abridged by JOANNA SCOTT-MONCRIEFF
' There's the skylight, you can get out through,' came a woman's voice. ' The chimney's right next door.'
The old man's eye could see their feet, the landlady's bedroom slippers alive with swansdown in the draught, and a workman's big boots. His heart sang! At last, at long last -luck! And on a Saturday afternoon! Producer

When Tim Severin first proposed sailing across the Atlantic in a leather boat - a replica of a medieval Currach - to retrace the legendary journey of St Brendan, the sixth-century Irish sailor-saint, he met with scepticism. But last summer The Brendan reached Iceland safely and next month he sets out to complete the voyage to America. Magnus Magnusson talks to the people who have contributed to turning Severin's idea into reality, including Bill and John Croggan who tanned the ox hides for the boat; Sean McGrail, Chief Archaeologist of the National Maritime Museum; and Tetur Sigurdsson, Head of the Icelandic Coastguard.
